We are becoming more aware of what we are putting on our skin, as the products we put on our skin absorb into the skin and can cause potential dangers of many chemicals that are used in your beauty products.

To help you navigate the clean beauty world, here are a list of ingredients to avoid in your beauty products. Keep an eye out for these chemicals and substances, and look for products that are free of sulfate, paraben, fragrance and phthalate.





These kind of ingredients, which are found in a majority of perfumes may be extremely disruptive to various systems in the body. Phthalates are not only found in perfumes but also nail polish, baby toys, lotions, hairsprays and many other skin care products. When sourcing natural beauty products look for ingredients listed as dibutyl phthalates and diethyl phthalate. Phthalates have been shown to harm females reproductive system and may cause birth defects used in large quantities.




Another common preservative to prevent the growth of yeast or mold in products, parabens are found in make up products like. foundation body wash, face wash, deodorant and lotions. Parabens can negatively impact hormone levels by disrupting oestrogen levels which could potentially lead to health complications in women. Look for ingredients labeled as isopropl, isobutyl or ingredients with suffix parabens and also look for products labeled paraben free.



This harmful ingredient also acts like estrogen when absorbed into the body and could contribute to endometriosis. It’s a common ingredient found in lots of sunscreens, so make sure you look for chemical free alternatives instead that contain only titanium oxide and zinc oxide.




This ingredient is used in many various hyperpigmentation serums and creams. Hydroquinone is a brightening product that acts as an artificial skin lighter that reduces melanin in your skin. It’s also considered a carcinogen and neurotoxin and has been associated with allergies.




This type of preservative prevents the growth of bacteria and is known as a carcinogen. Lots of people show allergic reaction to it when used and its found in a many of beauty products like nail polish, shampoo, conditioner, eyeshadow and body wash.





Acting as a hormone-disrupting ingredient, triclosan is found in toothpaste, hand sanitisers, make up products and deodorant. It can also harm the immune system and even how our muscles work. Triclosan could even assist with the creation of antibiotic resistant germs.




This type of sulphate can cause eye damage, canker sores, hormonal acne and skin irritations, and is found in toothpaste, mouthwash, foundation, face wash, body wash and shampoo. It’s the ingredient that creates FOAM in many products and it acts as a surfactant. Look for SLS free products.




This ingredient is found in baby oil, gels and body moisturisers. Mineral oil is a common preservative in skin care products as it helps capture moisture and prevents the product from going off. It is considered a carcinogen- meaning that it has cancer causing properties and is a by-product of petroleum, which is used to create gasoline. Look out for ingredients listed preservative free products to avoid this substance.



So next time when your down the beauty aisle try to look for products that don’t contain any of these harmful chemicals or substances.
